A treasure trove of media history
VRT's archive has meticulously preserved an amazing collection of audiovisual gems spanning decades. Every year, the archive becomes richer and offers a glimpse into the fascinating past and present of Belgian media, starting in 1931 until today.
The collection contains video, radio and music recordings, as well as a large collection of photographs. Each item has been carefully preserved, digitised, and catalogued, ensuring easy access and navigation for media professionals, researchers, and curious minds alike. Whether you seek historical documentaries, iconic interviews or unforgettable moments in Belgian radio and television, the VRT archive is a haven of captivating content waiting to be discovered.
Gems in our collection
Examples of historical images, and only a small selection of the archive, are those of sports icons such as our legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx, audio and video recordings at various festivals, music performances by Tina Turner and other pop icons in VRT's programmes, series about Belgium's agricultural past, and interviews with international architects such as Lucio Fontana.
Examples of other valuable interviews can be found in the movie magazine Première that started in 1953. It contains a wide range of interviews with international actors and actresses from the early days (from Paul Newman, Tippi Hedgren, Sofia Loren, Charles Bronson, Orson Welles to Alfred Hitchcock).
