VRT and European scaleups build future media solutions through innovative piloting programme

In today’s everchanging media landscape, new technologies such as artificial intelligence come with great opportunities, but also with significant challenges. Here, the innovative media solutions of scale-ups play a crucial role. With the STADIEM piloting programme, Flemish public broadcaster VRT builds on the strength of its international network to accelerate the impact of innovation. In the coming 6 months, 16 scale-ups will work together with several media organisations across Europe to build solutions for today’s largest media challenges.

The four key themes of STADIEM

The collaborations will focus on key themes, such as accessibility, diversity, and disinformation:

  • Together with VRT, Ceretai will be working on a platform that automatically analyses

  • diversity in audiovisual content. What is the age distribution between men and women? How are ethnicities represented? By measuring diversity and equality in a transparent way, media organisations can take informed decisions and strengthen an inclusive and equal media offering.

  • In making more content accessible to a wider audience, the usage of dialects becomes a barrier. In collaboration with Russmedia (Austria), aiconix.ai aims to improve dialect recognition for content creators, to support them in better transcribing, subtitling, and translating dialects.

  • The Chainless uses artificial intelligence to analyse and recognise faces, scenes, segments and texts very accurately. They will work together with the German media and digital company ProSiebenSat.1 on classifying and archiving audiovisual content. As a result, audiovisual content can be automatically tagged and personalised for the end user.

Unique programme to upscale innovative media solutions

With its accelerator VRT Sandbox, VRT leads an innovative piloting programme for scale-ups to foster the development of new media solutions. Thanks to this programme, scale-ups get the chance to co-create solutions together with international media organisations, based on their needs and challenges. As such, VRT can make its innovation processes more efficient across Europe and within the organization itself by exploring the latest media applications. The programme offers every scale-up a unique opportunity to network, grow and strengthen the impact of their services in the media sector. We’re excited to be building new media solutions and upscale our innovations across European borders!

The project ends in October 2023.

The STADIEM project is funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme under Grant Agreement number 957321.
