Last Days
How we deal with aging and death varies greatly worldwide. In Belgium, death may still be a taboo, but in many cultures it is allowed to laugh at, or even a reason to party. In this final series top photographer and journalist Lieve Blancquaert travels to 8 different countries. How do we deal with getting older and dying in Ghana, Japan, Cuba, Belgium, the US, Mexico, India, and Indonesia?
We discover for example how you can become 100 years old on the Japanese island of Okinawa, we visit the largest senior village in the Arizona desert, and join the Sulawesi people when they recover and raise their dead. Whoever dares to look at death, comes out with life. Last Days is an ode to that life.
Last Days is the last project in Lieve Blancquaert’s cycle about important moments in human life: birth (Birth Day), marriage (Wedding Day) and death (Last Days).
